Activities

1. Every year as a French student, I compete in the national French exam. Every year that I’ve taken it, I have placed in the top ten. However, in the 9th grade I was fortunate enough to receive a 1st place meaning that I scored a perfect 100 on the exam.
2. I have been part of the Congres team at Pine View that competes in the statewide French competition. My event, discours is the debate equivalent to extemporaneous speaking and one of the toughest subjects. The judges score students on a 1 - 10 scale based on their performance, vocabulary, grammar, and accent. Twice, I not only received perfect 10s but also a special award that meant that the judges felt I did better than expected and deserved special recognition.
3. The Smith Book Award is given out to only one young lady at Pine View. It is a college’s way of saying that they feel a student best exemplifies all the qualities they look for in a qualified student. In addition to the novel, I received a letter from the governor congratulating me on the award.
4. Being part of the French Honors Society is an honor given only to those who have received an “A” in French for at least three years.
Being accepted into the National Honors Society means that I have received the appropriate GPA and demonstrated good character. In addition, it means that in the future I will perform more community service to remain part of the society.
5. Mu Alpha Theta is the Math Honors Society. In order to be inducted, a student must have received an “A” in any mathematics course for a consecutive three years. It also cements my position as a proud nerd and lover of mathematics forever.

Future Plans

However, I am steadfast in my resolve to be a doctor. I want to spend my life working for organizations such as Doctors Without Borders because I understand that opportunities must be utilized fully and for the benefit of everyone. That is why I have completed not only six credits of science courses, but also six credits of foreign languages such as French and even Chinese. I commit myself to academic and cultural pursuits such as Academic Olympics, French Club, Congres and National Honors Society so that one day I might have a better understanding of the world around me and how to better interact with all the people in it. I want to continue my education so that I may become a more valuable community citizen with the ability to help more people. In college, I plan on studying both biochemistry and French. Although I want to be a doctor, foreign languages are crucial for proper communication, and even more important for my intended line of work. There is so much happening in the world - cholera plaguing Zimbabwe, starvation in Sudan, MDR-TB invading Russia. I feel that as part of the newer generation learning to live in an ever-growing world, it is our responsibility to help our neighbors, especially those who lack the precious resources and ability to help themselves. After all, we don't live in a village, we live in the world.
